Clockspring Assembly / Spiral Cable: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

1. Disarm SRS as described under Air Bag Arming and Disarming.
2. Ensure steering wheel is in straight-ahead position.
3. Disconnect horn electrical connector, then remove steering wheel retaining nut.
4. Using suitable steering wheel puller, remove steering wheel.
5. Remove steering column upper and lower covers.
6. Attach spiral cable stopper to spiral cable or body with tape.
7. Disconnect electrical connector, then remove four attaching screws and spiral cable.

INSTALLATION

1. Ensure ignition is turned Off.
2. Install spiral cable, tighten attaching screws to specifications, then connect electrical connector.
3. Remove stopper by pulling two guide pins.
4. If stopper is not used, align spiral cable to neutral position as follows:

a. Turn spiral cable clockwise until it contacts stopper. Turn cable back approximately two full turns until yellow alignment mark appears on

lefthand gear, Fig. 53.

b. Align spiral cable's arrow mark with this yellow mark.

5. Install steering wheel, aligning spiral cable guide pins, then pull spiral cable connector through wheel.
6. Connect horn electrical connector, then secure spiral cable harness with pawls in steering wheel.
7. Tighten steering wheel retaining nut to specifications.

Conduct self-diagnosis to ensure entire SRS operates properly.
(Use CONSULT or warning lamp check.)
