When disassembling power steering gears refer to Fig. 10, noting the following:
1. Before disassembling, measure pinion rotating torque and record, then drain fluid.
2. Remove pinion gear, tie rod outer sockets and boots.
3. Loosen tie rod inner socket by prying up staking, then remove retainer and pinion assembly.
4. Drill staked portion of the end cover with a 0.079-0.098 inch drill bit, then remove gear housing end cover and draw rack out of tube.
5. Remove rack seal ring by heating with a heat gun, then replace with a new one by heating and installing by hand.
6. Remove center bushing and rack oil seal with a tape wrapped socket and extension bar.

PINION ROTATING TORQUE ADJUSTMENT

1. With gears at neutral without fluid, coat adjusting screw with locking sealant and install it.
2. Lightly tighten locknut, then torque adjusting screw to 43-52 inch lbs. Loosen it, then retorque to 0.43-1.74 inch lbs.
3. Move rack through entire stroke several times.
4. Measure pinion rotating torque within 180° from neutral and stop at point of greatest resistance.
5. Loosen adjusting screw, then torque to 43-52 inch lbs. Loosen adjusting screw 40-60°.
6. If steering gear rack sliding force is not 27.6-37.5 lbs. at neutral point, or 27.6-41.9 lbs. away from neutral point, repeat procedure from step 2. If

still not within specifications, replace steering gear.

7. Measure pinion rotating within 100° of neutral point.
8. The maximum value allowable is 3.5 ft. lbs. and the minimum is 16 inch lbs.

ASSEMBLE

1. Using seal installation tool No. KV48104400, or equivalent, compress the outside of rack seal ring to position and secure it on rack. Insert tool on

rack from the tooth side.

2. Use a plastic film to protect rack oil seal from damage from rack teeth and install rack oil seal. Remove plastic film after installation. Lips of rack

oil seal face each other.

3. Install center bushing and rack oil seal with rack assembly, then tighten cylinder end cover to specifications. Stake housing to secure end cover.

4. Set rack gear in neutral position so that dimension L, Fig. 12, is 2.697 inches, then coat pinion oil seal with multi-purpose grease and install into

pinion housing. Ensure lip of seal faces up.

5. Install new pinion bearing adjusting shim(s), then install pinion seal ring on pinion gear assembly using a heat gun to heat seal ring before

installing.

6. Coat needle bearing roller and oil seal lip with multi-purpose grease and install pinion assembly to housing.

7. Coat rear oil seal lip with multi-purpose grease and install into rear housing, then install rear cover cap as shown in Fig. 13.
8. Install solenoid valve if appicable.
9. Install diaphragm spring to retainer in the following order; retainer, spring washer, diaphragm spring.

10. Attach lock plate (2), to side rod inner socket (1), then apply locking sealant to inner socket threads and screw inner socket into rack and tighten to

specifications. Bend lock plate at two cut out portions.
