Valve Clearance: Adjustments

1.

Remove camshaft and cam followers from cylinder head, marking each for installation.

Measure thickness of shims needed as follows:
a. If the clearances are not correct when measured, remove existing shims and measure their thickness.

b. If clearance measured is not correct, determine correct shim needed by using columns A or B in Fig. 59.
c. Assemble and check valve clearance.

If repairs or replacement have been performed and valve clearance is not correct, proceed as follows:
a. Remove existing shims and install 2.25mm shims. These will establish a base measurement.
b. Ensure crankshaft is in locked position, then install camshaft.
c. Measure and record valve clearance. To determine correct shims, use column C, Fig. 59.
d. Install correct shims with cam followers and check valve clearance.
e. Install camshaft and reset valve timing.
