Steering Gear: Service and Repair
Power Steering Gear
Removal/Installation
Steering gear service is limited to adjustment of the rack plunger and replacement of the distribution valve. If other malfunctions are evident, the steering
gear should be replaced as an assembly.
1.
Disconnect battery ground cable, then raise vehicle.
2.
Drain steering hydraulic system by removing filler cap and disconnecting high pressure hose.
3.
Disconnect low pressure hose and steering shaft coupling.
4.
Remove safety spring clips and steering gear bolts.
5.
Disconnect both tie rod ends.
6.
Remove nut securing steering arm to front crossmember and remove steering gear towards rear.
7.
Reverse procedure to install.
Distribution Valve
Removal
1.
Remove steering rack, steering rack plunger and hydraulic pipes.
2.
Remove distribution valve.
Installation

Note: This valve should never be operated while plugged. While installation is being performed, ensure cleanliness of parts.
1.
Coat pinion (5) with ``MECA GRAISSE BD 250'' grease or equivalent. Insert pinion into rack, Fig. 5.
2.
Install valve mounting bolts and tighten to specifications.
3.
Install and adjust steering rack plunger.
4.
Install hydraulic pipes and tighten fittings to specifications.
5.
Install steering rack, then check steering wheel alignment with wheels in straight ahead position. Make adjustments if necessary.
