Camshaft: Service and Repair

Removal

1.

Remove the battery and its support, cam cover and gasket, the upper belt cover, belt, pulley and timing belt.

2.

Remove the distributor cap, rotor, bolt, rotor support and mounting plate.

3.

Loosen two camshaft pinion bolts, then remove pins, camshaft pinions and their keys.

Remove cover (10), oil pipes, then rotate and position camshafts in such a way that keys (12) and (13) are approximately at 3 o'clock, Fig. 78.

Loosen camshaft bearing fastening bolts in order as shown in Fig. 79. Remove No. 4 and 2 bearings, then No. 3, 1 and 5.

6.

Remove the oil seal, camshafts and hydraulic cam followers after identifying their position.

Installation

If the hydraulic cam follower is hard under thumb pressure, remove the piston part (2), Fig. 80, by tapping cam follower on a piece of wood.

2.

Press on the ball (3) to empty chamber (4). Then install cam followers (1) in cylinder head in their same positions. Ensure all chambers are filled
with motor oil before installation.

3.

Install and position camshafts in such a way that keys (12) and (13) are set at 3 o'clock, Fig. 78. The intake camshaft is identified by a keyway on
the distributor side.
