Alignment: Testing and Inspection

Alignment angles should be checked with vehicle at normal curb weight, without passengers or cargo. Inspection and adjustments should be performed
on equipment capable of checking alignment of the front wheels with the rear wheels, Fig. 1. Prior to checking alignment angles, ensure that the steering
gear is centered. As the steering lock on power steering models is limited by the power assisted ram travel, the steering lock does not include a positive
stop. On models equipped with power steering, place steering ram in center of its travel as follows:

Place vehicle on alignment rack with front wheels resting on turntables, then unlock turntables.

2.

Start engine and run at idle speed.

3.

Move steering through full lock to the right and hold it as far as it will travel, then measure the amount that the ram piston projects from the
steering gear and record measurement.

4.

Move steering through full lock to the left and hold it as far as it will travel, then measure the amount that the piston rod projects from the steering
gear and record measurement.

5.

To center the steering gear, move steering until piston rod projection is 1/2 the sum of the measurements obtained in steps 3 and 4, then stop
engine. (Add the measurements obtained in steps 3 and 4, then divide the sum by 2).
