Servotronic Control Unit: Steering is Hard and Stiff After Starting the Engine

INFORMATION

This bulletin replaces bulletin Group 4, # 13/08, dated 5-5-2008. Changes/additions compared to the previous Technical Information:

Concerns:

Control unit for speed-sensitive power-steering (Servotronic).

INFORMATION:

Steering is hard and stiff after starting the engine...

1- when maneuvering and parking,
2- when driving (in city traffic),
3- for about 20 seconds.

Information on 1 (... when maneuvering and parking) and 2 (... when driving):
The Servotronic control unit is started in "emergency operation mode" in this case. In this mode, the power-assistance forces are much the same as
standard power-steering forces. The steering (unlike Servotronic assistance) feels hard and stiff when you maneuver the vehicle and when driving in
city traffic.

When you switch off the ignition and start the engine again (more slowly this time), the Servotronic control unit reverts to "normal mode".

Information on 3 (... for about 20 seconds):
The Servotronic control unit starts with a time delay. As a result, power assistance feels hard and stiff for about 20 seconds. Power assistance is back
to normal again after 20 seconds.

The reason for the complaints described above is that the vehicle key was inserted in the ignition lock and the engine was started extremely quickly.

A modified Servotronic control unit is installed since mid-February 2008.

Action Required:

Please ask your customers to describe how (quickly/slowly) they would usually start the vehicle and inform them about the issue described above.
In the event of a complaint, install the new Servotronic control unit if no mechanical faults can be found in the steering system. --> Workshop Manual
