Constant Velocity Joint: Service and Repair
GE 82 (Transmission Side) Constant Velocity Joint
1.
Place a piece of adhesive tape on seal surface of differential adjuster nuts.

Cut retaining collar and boot along their entire length and remove as much grease as possible.
3.
Using pliers, remove three locking plate tabs, then the yoke. Do not remove rollers from their respective journals. The roller cages and needle
bearings are matched and must never be separated. To prevent separation, wrap adhesive tape around spider.
Warning: Never use thinner for cleaning component parts.

Using suitable press, remove spider.
5.
If replacing spider and/or boot, proceed as follows:
a. Lubricate driveshaft and slide on new retaining collar and boot.
b. Push spider back onto splined shaft.
c. Make three crimps, spaced 120° apart, by stamping metal splines on driveshaft.

d. Fabricate shim, Fig. 8.
e. Remove adhesive tape and engage spider in yoke, then insert fabricated shim between locking plate and yoke.
f.
Using bronze drift punch, carefully put locking plate tabs back into original position, then remove shim.
g. Distribute approximately 5-1/4 ounces of suitable grease in boot and yoke, then position boot lips in driveshaft grooves and on metal housing
and place retaining spring on boot.
h. Insert a smooth round ended rod between boot and yoke to restrict the amount of air contained inside the joint.

Lengthen or shorten joint until measurement A, Fig. 9, is 6.378 ± .039 inch (162 ± 1 mm). This measurement is taken between end of boot
and largest diameter machined face of yoke.

After joint is correctly adjusted, remove rod.
k. Using flexible piece of wire, place retaining spring on boot. Ensure spring is not stretched and that coils are still touching after
assembly.
6.
When replacing yoke, proceed as follows:
a. Lubricate driveshaft and slide on new retaining collar and new boot.
