Calculation of the gear ratio “i”
Calculation of the gear ratio “i”
The gear ratio between two gears, is obtained by dividing the number of teeth on the driven gear (Z2) by the number of teeth on the driving gear (Z1).
For example: O2T manual gearbox

Gears5. Road speedFinal group
DriverZG1 = 46ZA1 = 18
DrivenZG2 = 41ZA2 = 66

i = Z2 : Z1 → Note
iG = Gear reduction in a gear 5 = ZG2 : ZG1 = 41 : 46 = 0.891
iA = Wheel drive gear ratio = ZA2 : ZA1 = 66 : 18 = 3.611
itotal. = overall ratio = iG x iA = 0.891 x 3.611 = 3.217
1)  Z1 = Number of teeth of driver pinion, Z2 = number of teeth of driven pinion.
