Calculating overall gear ratio „i“
Calculating overall gear ratio „i“
The gear ratio between two gears, is obtained by dividing the number of teeth on the driven gear (Z2) by the number of teeth on the driving gear (Z1).
Example: 02T manual gearbox

Gears5. gearFinal group
DriverZG1 = 46ZA1 = 18
DrivenZG2 = 41ZA2 = 66

i = Z2 : Z1 → Remark
iG = Gear reduction in 5th gear = ZG2 : ZG1 = 41 : 46 = 0.891
iG = Final group gear ratio = ZA 2 : ZA1 = 66 : 18 = 3,611
itotal. = Overall ratio = iG x iA = 0.891 x 3.611 = 3.217
1)  Z1 = Number of teeth of driving gear, Z2 = number of teeth of driving gear.
