Removing and installing gearbox > < Torque converter
Checking ATF level
Checking ATF level
Test preconditions
l  Gearbox is not in emergency running mode, ATF temperature is not above approx. 30 °C
l  Vehicle standing on level ground
l  Selector lever in “P”
–  Remove noise insulation tray.
   
–  Secure reservoir of ATF filling unit -V.A.G 1924- to vehicle.
–  Connect fault reader -V.A.G 1551-, enter address word 02 “Gearbox electronics” and advance until “Select function XX” is indicated on the display → Automatic gearbox 099, four-wheel drive -Self-diagnosis-; Rep. Gr.01.
–  Start engine.
–  Raise vehicle.
–  Place drip tray under gearbox.

Indicated on display:
–  Press buttons 0 and 8. (“Read measured value block” is selected with 08.)

–  Confirm entry with Q key.

–  Press buttons 0, 0, 5. (005 selects “display group number 005”.)
–  Confirm entry with Q key.

The first display zone shows the ATF temperature.
–  Bring ATF to test temperature.
Test temperature 35 °C to 45 °C

–  Remove ATF inspection plug from oil pan.

The ATF present in the overflow pipe -arrow 2- runs out.
If ATF drips out of bore:
ATF does not need topping up.
–  Fit new oil seal to plug -arrow 1- and tighten to 15 Nm. This concludes the ATF check.
Plug -arrow 3- and cap -arrow 4- remain closed.
If the ATF present in the overflow pipe now runs out of the bore:
–  Top up ATF → Chapter.
