Removing gearbox
If the gearbox is to be removed in order to install a repair set, first drain ATF.
–  First check whether a coded radio is fitted. In this case, obtain anti-theft code.
–  Move selector lever to “P” position.
–  With the ignition switched off, disconnect the battery earth strap.
–  Remove cover from engine.
   
–  Remove trim -1- for air duct -arrows-.
–  Remove trim -2- for battery.
–  Pull connector off coolant expansion tank.
–  Unbolt coolant expansion tank and place to side. Do not open cooling system.
–  Remove battery and battery tray → Electrical system; Rep. Gr.27.
–  Remove air filter → Rep. Gr.24.
  Note!
Comply with the dismantling and assembling procedure when removing the selector lever cable from the gearbox.

–  First remove the selector cable support bracket from gearbox -arrow A-.
–  Then pull selector lever cable -1- upwards off selector shaft lever -2--arrow B-.
t  Do not bend or kink selector lever cable.

–  Pull connector -1- off wire for multi-function switch.
–  Turn locking lever -2- towards gearbox, unplug connector for gearbox wiring harness.
–  Remove electrical connections on starter.
–  Remove starter -3- → Electrical system; Rep. Gr.27.
–  Tie up coolant tank, e.g. with wire.
–  Pull cable duct and cables forwards.

–  Clamp-off ATF cooler hoses with hose clamps -3094- and detach at ATF cooler.
–  Seal ATF cooler with clean plugs.
–  Unhook selector lever cable from bracket -arrow-.
–  Remove upper engine/gearbox securing bolts with socket -T10099/1-.
Vehicles with turbocharged engine
–  Remove connecting hose between charge air cooler and induction manifold → Rep. Gr.21.
Continuation for all vehicles
–  If there are hose and cable connections in area of engine support eye for support bracket -10 - 222 A-, remove these now.

–  Assemble support bracket -10 - 222 A- in conjunction with adapters -10 - 222 A/14- and -10 - 222 A/15- as well as shackle -10 - 222 A/12-.
–  Take up weight of engine/gearbox assembly on spindles.
–  Raise vehicle until weight is taken off front axle.

–  Unscrew bolt for left drive shaft -arrow- and wheel bolts for left wheel.
–  Raise vehicle.
–  Remove left wheel.
–  Remove noise insulation tray.
–  Separate front exhaust pipe from catalytic converter → Rep. Gr.26.

–  Remove earth strap -1- from bracket on gearbox.
–  Remove bracket -2- from valve body cover.
–  Disconnect drive shafts at gearbox flanges.
–  Raise right drive shaft and secure.

–  Separate -arrow- left coupling rod from anti-roll bar.

–  Separate left threaded connection -arrow- between wheel bearing housing and lower swivel joint.
–  Turn steering to left full lock and press drive shaft out of wheel bearing housing → Running gear, axles, steering - front and four-wheel drive; Rep. Gr.40.
–  Remove left drive shaft.

–  Unscrew bearing for right flange shaft -arrows- and flange shaft -1- from stub shaft.

–  Remove lower engine/gearbox securing bolts -1-.
–  When doing this, remove bracket -2- for earth strap from gearbox.
–  Do not yet remove securing bolt -3-.
–  Remove swivelling support -4- by unscrewing nut -5- and pulling out bolt.
–  Unscrew bolts -6-.

–  Remove lower rear engine/gearbox connecting bolt -A-.
–  Unclip cap for cover for torque converter nuts.
–  Remove nuts -arrow- from torque converter (Qty. 3) using socket V 175. Turn crankshaft through 120° for each bolt.

–  Unbolt hexagon bolts -arrows A- of left engine/gearbox mounting -2- from left bracket -1-.
–  Loosen hexagon nut -arrow B-.
–  Then remove left bracket -1- from gearbox -arrows C-.
–  Carefully tilt engine and gearbox. To do this lower left-hand spindle approx. 45 mm on support bracket -10 - 222 A-.

–  When lowering, make sure valve body cover -1- does not touch charge air cooler -2-.
To remove 5-speed automatic gearbox 09B, set up gearbox support -3282- with adjustment plate -3282/32-.
–  Align arms of gearbox support according to holes in adjustment plate.

–  Screw in support elements -A- as illustrated on adjustment plate.
–  Position gearbox jack under vehicle. Arrow -B- on adjustment plate points in direction of vehicle travel.

–  Align adjustment plate parallel to gearbox.
–  Secure gearbox to gearbox support -3282- using bolt -A-.
–  Remove engine/gearbox connecting bolt -arrow-.

–  Press gearbox off engine while simultaneously pressing torque converter out of drive plate.
–  Press torque converter against ATF pump -arrow-.
–  Carefully swivel gearbox towards subframe.
–  Now pull engine forwards with tensioning belt -T10038-.

–  Secure belt to front towing eye and to engine sump.
–  Belt can also be secured to eye on crankcase.
–  Carefully pull engine forwards to obtain adequate clearance for lowering gearbox.
–  Lower gearbox slightly.
–  Swivel in gearbox on left and carefully lower it further.
–  Guide gearbox past subframe whilst lowering.
–  When lowering gearbox, change position of gearbox using spindles of gearbox support -3282-.

–  When lowering, make sure valve body cover -1- does not touch charge air cooler -2-.
–  Secure torque converter to prevent it from falling out.
