Removing and installing selector mechanism → Chapter „Gear engagement and selection control cables: removing and fitting“ Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1331- Removal: –  First the vehicle should be checked if a coded radio is installed. If necessary obtain radio anti-theft code first. –  With ignition switched off, disconnect battery → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27. –  Remove gear knob with gaiter → Chapter. –  If noise insulation is present, remove it. –  Remove centre console → General body repairs, interior; Rep. gr.68.

–  Remove nuts -arrows- for selector housing and centre console securing bracket. –  Remove complete air filter housing if it is located over selector mechanism → Rep. gr.24.

–  Pull cable end-piece off gear selector cable and gate selector cable forward to stop in -direction of arrow 1- and then lock in -direction of arrow 2-.

Remove securing clips -arrows- for cables from cable support bracket. –  Separate exhaust system on front separating point → Rep. gr.26. –  Detach exhaust system → Rep. gr.26. –  Remove heat shield → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. gr.66. –  Swing selector housing down and remove with selector cables. Installation Installation is carried out in the reverse sequence; note the following:

–  Route cables -1- from selector mechanism -2- to gearbox as follows: t  Cables must be routed parallel to one another as far as cable support bracket on gearbox. t  The cables must be routed in the slot provided in heat shield -3-.

Clip -A- holds cables and heat shield together in position. –  Insert cables into cable end-pieces.

Install securing clips -arrows- for cables to cable support bracket.

–  Align selector housing parallel to body. l  Distance to body must then be the same on both sides. –  Install centre console → General body repairs, interior; Rep. gr.68. –  Renew clamp -arrow-. –  Install heat shield → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. gr.66. –  Assemble and attach exhaust system → Rep. gr.26. –  Adjust selector mechanism → Chapter. –  If removed, install complete air filter housing → Rep. gr.24. –  Connect battery and follow procedure after connecting battery → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.
