–  First the vehicle should be checked if a coded radio is installed. If necessary obtain radio anti-theft code first.
–  Remove complete air filter housing if it is located over selector mechanism → Rep. gr.24.
–  Remove battery → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.
–  Remove battery tray → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.

–  Remove securing clip -1- for gear selector cable -2- from gearbox selector lever.
–  Pull gear selector cable off pin.
–  Remove relay lever -3- together with cable end-piece → Fig..
–  Remove gearbox selector lever by unscrewing nut -4-.

–  Lever out seal with oil seal extractor lever -T20143/1-.

–  Pack space between sealing lip and dust lip -arrow- half full with sealing grease -G 052 128 A1-.

–  Drive seal in with tube -VW 423- onto stop.
The remaining installation steps are carried out in reverse sequence - note the following points:
–  Install gearbox selector lever to gearbox selector shaft → Fig..
–  Secure gearbox selector lever by tightening hexagon nut to specified torque → Item.
–  Adjust selector mechanism → Chapter.
–  If removed, install complete air filter housing → Rep. gr.24.
