Differential > < Adjusting output shaft for 5th, 6th and reverse gears

  • Renewing seals for flange shaft or stub shaft with gearbox installed

Installing
Installing
   
–  Drive in new seal to stop, being careful not to cant seal.
–  Half-fill space between sealing lip and dust lip with grease -G 052 128 A1-.
–  Grease splines and cylindrical shaft of stub shaft with constant velocity joint grease -G 052 738 A2-.
–  Insert stub shaft.
–  Secure stub shaft with countersunk bolt, tightening to specified torque → Item.
Gearbox with bearing housing for flange shaft
  N39-0860
Do not install engine/gearbox bolt -1- until differential support -2- has been installed → Anchor.
–  Renew O-ring on stub shaft.
–  Grease following parts with constant velocity joint grease -G 052 738 A2-:
t  Splines of right flange shaft,
t  Area around O-ring on stub shaft.
  N34-1580
–  Install bearing housing -1- with right flange shaft and differential support -2-.
–  First tighten all securing bolts hand-tight.
–  First tighten flange shaft bearing to gearbox carrier by tightening securing bolts -A-.
–  Then tighten differential support securing bolts to specified torque → Item and → Item.
–  Then bearing housing must be tightened to specified torque → Item.

–  Finally, install an engine/gearbox connecting bolt (item -1-).
Vehicles with 4-cylinder engine
–  Install bracket, if present, between turbocharger and cylinder block → Rep. Gr.21.
Gearbox without bearing housing for flange shaft
  N34-1057
–  Renew O-ring -A-.
–  Grease right flange shaft splines and area of O-ring on stub shaft -arrow- with constant velocity joint grease -G 052 738 A2-.
–  Carefully insert flange shaft in stub shaft, taking care not to damage O-ring!
Vehicles with 4-cylinder engine
  N34-1575
–  Bolt flange shaft bearing to gearbox carrier -B- and tighten bolts -A- to specified torque → Chapter, figure N34-1569, item D.
–  Install bracket, if present, between turbocharger and cylinder block → Rep. Gr.21.
Vehicles with 6-cylinder engine
  N34-1571
–  Bolt flange shaft bearing to gearbox carrier -B- and tighten bolts -A- to specified torque → Chapter, figure N34-1570, item B.
Continuation for all vehicles
–  Bolt drive shaft to flange shaft → Running gear, axles, steering front and four-wheel drive; Rep. Gr.40.
–  Check gear oil → Chapter.
–  Install noise insulation tray.
