Removing

  • ‒ Selector lever in "P" position.
  • ‒ Release handbrake.
  • ‒ Raise vehicle.
  • ‒ Unbolt left and right-hand drive shafts and tie-up.
  • ‒ Loosen propshaft bolts to viscous coupling, do not remove.
  • ‒ Unclip cable and vacuum pipes/hoses.

  • ‒ Pull connector off freewheel lock actuator connection.
  • ‒ Separate freewheel lock actuator vacuum hose/pipe.
  • ‒ Place gearbox jack V.A.G 1383 A with plate 1359/2 under final drive and support final drive.
  • ‒ → Remove bolt securing final drive mounting bracket to cross member (arrow).
  • ‒ Lower final drive slightly.

  • ‒ → Remove upper bolts (arrows).
  • ‒ Unscrew propshaft bolts from viscous coupling.
  • ‒ Press final drive off propshaft.
  • ‒ Secure propshaft against falling.
  • ‒ Lower final drive.

Installing

Install in reverse order.

  • ‒ → When installing final drive, align propshaft and viscous coupling pins to one another using gearbox jack spindle.

→ Do not damage propshaft centralizing sleeve seal during installation. Propshaft must not be canted, but push horizontally onto the centring pin. If damaged renew propshaft .

Tightening torques

Final drive to axle body
Always renew bolts

30 Nm
+ 90°

Final drive mounting bracket securing bolt to cross member
Always renew bolt


260 Nm

Mounting bracket to final drive
Always renew bolts

30 Nm
+ 90°

Drive plate to viscous coupling

45 Nm

Drive shaft to drive flange

45 Nm
