Removing

Note:

Note radio coding for vehicles with coded radio.

  • ‒ Remove battery

=> Electrical system; Repair group 27

  • ‒ → Remove air guide trim -1-.
  • ‒ Remove trim for battery -2-.

  • ‒ → Remove additional relay carrier, in engine compartment left if fitted (arrows -1- and -2-).
  • ‒ Remove battery trim with coolant system expansion reservoir (arrows -3-) and lay to one side. Do not open coolant system.

  • ‒ → Lever gear selector cable -A- off from gear selector lever.
  • ‒ Lever gate selector cable off relay lever.

  • ‒ → Take both cables out of retainer on gearbox, to do this press tabs together (arrows).

  • ‒ → Remove front exhaust system shield and slide back between exhaust system and rear shield, so that the selector cable and gate cable (arrows) are visible.

Note:

If the shield cannot be slid rearwards then the exhaust system is to be separated before the catalyst and the shield removed.

  • ‒ Remove both front seats with rails.

=> Repair group 72

  • ‒ Loosen frame below front seats.

=> Repair group 68

  • ‒ Remove gear stick knob with spring.
  • ‒ → Pull release for reverse gear -A- with cover -B- off.

  • ‒ → Remove centre console (arrows) and lay to one side, do not separate cable connections.

=> Repair group 68

  • ‒ Remove centre cover below dash panel.

=> Repair group 68

  • ‒ → Remove reinforcing strut below dash panel (arrows).
  • ‒ Remove cover and grip for handbrake.

=> Repair group 68

  • ‒ Remove passenger's side sill trim.

=> Repair group 68

  • ‒ Loosen passenger's side floor covering and fold away over gear stick to driver's side.
  • ‒ Remove vent for rear duct.

=> Repair group 80

  • ‒ Remove rear duct.

=> Repair group 80

  • ‒ → Unscrew support bracket for both cables (arrows) on floor plate.

  • ‒ → Detach gear selector cable and gate selector cable from gear stick, to do this press locking mechanism towards rear onto stop (arrow -1-) and then turn to left to lock (arrow -2-).

  • ‒ → Take both cables out of gear stick housing, to do this press tabs together (arrows).
  • ‒ Pull both cables out carefully into passenger compartment.

Installing

Installation is carried out in the reverse sequence, when doing this note the following:

  • ‒ Guide gear selector cable and gate selector cable ends individually into the holes in floor plate.
  • ‒ → Guide gear selector cable and gate selector cable (arrows) under floor to gearbox.

→ Installation position:

The gear selector cable -A- crosses over the gate selector cable -B-.

  • ‒ Press both cables into gearbox mounting onto stop.

  • ‒ → Press gear selector cable -A- onto gear stick lever.
  • ‒ Press gate selector cable -B- onto gate selector lever.

  • ‒ → Press gear stick jig in onto stop.
  • ‒ Then secure gear stick jig, to do this assemble release for reverse gear and gear stick knob.

  • ‒ → Press gear selector cable tongued piece -A- and gate selector cable tongued piece -B- in this position into mounting onto stop, then turn locking mechanism to right.

The spring presses the locking mechanism into normal position.

  • ‒ Remove gear stick jig.

Tightening torque

→ Reinforcing strut under dash panel to body: 20 Nm
