Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Manual multimeter -VAG 1526C- or digital multimeter -VAG 1715-
t  Auxiliary cable kit -VAG 1594C-
t  Adapter cable -VAG 1598/31-
t  Current flow diagrams, electrical fault finding and fitting locations

   
t  Adapter cable -VAG 1598/22-
  Note
t  It is extremely important to keep to the tightening torque of 20 Nm to ensure the knock sensors -G61- perform perfectly.
t  Only gold-plated contacts may be used when servicing the knock sensor I -G61-connector contacts
Test condition
–  Knock sensor I -G61- fault recognised by self-diagnosis → Chapter.

Checking sequence
  N28-0132
–  Remove from the Knock sensor I -G61--arrow- the 2-pin connector.
Engine code letters: BXV - BBM
–  Connect the engine tester -VAG 1598/22- to the control unit cable harness.

Engine code letters: AZQ - BME
  E01-0168
–  Connect the engine tester -VAG 1598/31- to the control unit cable harness. Without connecting the engine control unit.

–  Check wiring between the adapter cable -VAG 1598/31- or adapter cable -VAG 1598/22- and 2-pin connector for open circuit according to current flow diagram:

Wire resistance: 1.5 Ω max.

–  Additionally check wires for short to one another.
t  Specification: ∞ Ω.
If no wiring fault is detected:
–  Loosen the knock sensor I -G61- and tighten again to 20 Nm.
–  Take vehicle for a test drive.
Observe the necessary safety precautions when carrying out a road test → Chapter
–  During the road test the following operating conditions must be fulfilled:
l  The coolant temperature must be more than 80 ℃.
l  When the temperature is reached, operating conditions - Idling, Part throttle, Full throttle and Overrun must be attained several times.
l  At full throttle, revs must exceed 3500 rpm.
–  Again interrogate the control unit fault memory. → Chapter
If the fault continues:
–  Replace the Knock sensor I -G61- → Item.
