Checking fuel pump > < Removing and installing parts of the fuel supply system

Test sequence
–  Operate starter motor briefly. Fuel pump must be audibly heard to run.
If the fuel pump does not run:
–  Pull fuel pump relay -J17- out of relay plate with fuse box (relay position 8).
  Note!
For the remaining sequence it is possible that the earth strap must be disconnected from the battery. Therefore check first if a radio with an anti-theft code is installed and if this is the case obtain the anti-theft code.
   
–  Connect remote control -V.A.G 1348/3A- to contact 2 to fuel pump and battery plus (+) with adapter cable -V.A.G 1348/3-2-.
–  Operate remote control.
Fuel pump runs:
–  Check activation of fuel pump relay: → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations
Fuel pump does not run:
–  Fold rear seat forward.
–  Remove cover for fuel delivery unit.
When the cover is removed:
  E20-0050
–  Pull 4-pin connector -1- off flange of fuel tank -2-.
–  Connect diode test lamp -V.A.G 1527 B- to outer contacts of connector with adapter wiring from -V.A.G 1594 A-.
–  Operate remote control The LED must light-up
LED does not light-up:
–  Locate an eliminate open circuit referring to current flow diagram: → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations
LED lights-up (voltage supply OK.):
  E20-0013
–  Undo union nut with key -U-40055 A-.
–  Check that the electrical wires between flange and fuel pump are connected.
If no open circuit can be located:
–  Fuel pump defective, renew fuel delivery unit → Chapter; Removing and installing fuel delivery unit.
