Checking fuel tank breather
   
Checking fuel tank breather
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Vacuum tester -V.A.G 1368-
t  Adapter -SAT 1368/1-
t  Hand vacuum pump -SAT 1390-

Test sequence
   
–  Pull activated charcoal filter canister -1- breather line -2- off throttle valve control part -3-.
–  Connect breather line -5- from fuel tank to activated charcoal filter canister to vacuum tester -V.A.G 1368- -connection A-, use adapter -SAT 1368/1- for this.
–  Set vacuum tester to position -B-.
–  Initiate final control diagnosis and select activated charcoal filter canister solenoid valve -N80- → Vehicle diagnosis, testing and information systemVAS 5051.
–  Operate hand vacuum pump -V.A.G 1390- several times. A vacuum must not build-up.
If a vacuum builds-up:
–  Check vent connection -6- on activated charcoal filter canister -1- for soiling, clean if necessary.
If a vacuum does not build-up

–  Remove fuel filler cap from fuel filler neck.
–  Connect hand vacuum pump -SAT 1390- to vacuum tester -V.A.G 1368- -connection B-
–  Set vacuum tester to position -A/B-.
–  Operate -SAT 1390- several times. A vacuum must not build-up.
If a vacuum builds-up:
–  Check gravity valve → Item
–  Check line -1- from fuel tank for through-flow.
If a vacuum does not build-up:
–  Fit fuel filler cap to fuel filler neck.
–  Operate hand vacuum pump -SAT 1390- several times. A vacuum must not build-up.
  Note!
When fuel level in fuel tank is low the hand vacuum pump must be operated at least 20…30 times.
If a vacuum builds-up:
–  Renew fuel filler cap for fuel filler neck.
