Removing and installing glow plugs
Removing and installing glow plugs

Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Extension and socket -3220-, see equivalent → Anchor

Checking
The pre-heating system is checked via the self diagnosis of the engine control unit.
The required tests are performed via the Guided Fault Finding function.
Removing
–  Switch off ignition.

–  Loosen the engine cover at the locations -arrows- and remove.
–  Remove the sound insulation of the injector valves.
–  Clean glow plug openings in cylinder head (make sure no dirt enters the cylinder).
  Note
t  Cleaning procedure:
t  Use a vacuum cleaner to remove coarse dirt.
t  Spray a brake cleaner or similar suitable product onto the glow plug openings, let it work in briefly, and blow out with compressed air.
t  Then clean glow plug opening using a cloth moistened with oil.
  Caution
Ensure that no line connection is damaged when disconnecting the glow plug connectors, as the entire wiring harness otherwise has to be renewed.
Do not squeeze the pliers -3314- too firmly when pulling off glow plug connectors, because otherwise the support sleeve may be damaged.

–  Detach the injector connectors -A- and the fuel pressure sender -G247--C-.

–  Open cable guide fasteners to free wiring harness.

–  Position pliers -3314- with groove -arrow A- on support sleeve shoulder -arrow B- and pull plugs off glow pin plugs.

–  Remove the connector of the glow plug carefully -in the direction of the arrow-.

–  To loosen the glow plugs, use the jointed spanner -3220-.
Fitting
–  To tighten the glow plugs, use the jointed spanner -3220- with a suitable torque wrench.
–  Then tighten glow plugs to specified torque.
t  Tightening torque: 18 Nm
–  Fit glow plug connectors onto glow plugs and ensure they are properly seated.
–  Open cable guide fasteners to free wiring harness.
–  Fix the wiring harness back into the cable guide.
–  Further assembly in reverse order of removal.
–  Clear fault memory of engine control unit.
