Checking compression
Checking compression
  Note
Before removing glow plugs check idling speed smooth running control using Vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system -VAS 5051B-. The compression test is warranted only if one or more cylinders are conspicuous during this idling speed check.

Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  U/J extension and socket, 10 mm -3220-
t  Torque wrench (5...50 Nm) -V.A.G 1331-
t  Adapter -V.A.G 1381/12-
t  Compression tester -V.A.G 1763-

Test prerequisites
l  Engine oil temperature must be at least 30 °C.
l  The battery voltage must be at least 11.5 V.
l  All electrical consumers, e.g. lights and rear window heating, must be switched off.
l  If the vehicle is equipped with an air conditioner, it must be switched off.
Test procedure
–  Note safety precautions before beginning work → Chapter.
–  Remove engine cover.
–  Pull off central connector for unit injectors.
  Note
Always observe the notes on removing and installing the ceramic glow plugs → Chapter.
–  Remove all ceramic glow plugs using U/J extension and socket 10 mm -3220-.

–  Screw in adapter -V.A.G 1381/12- in place of the ceramic glow plugs.
–  Check compression using compression tester -V.A.G 1763-.
  Note
Using compression tester ⇒ Operating instructions.
–  Operate starter until tester shows no further pressure increase.
Compression pressures:
New: 25...31 bar, wear limit: 19 bar
Maximum permissible difference between all cylinders: 5 bar
  Note
Always observe the notes on removing and installing the ceramic glow plugs → Chapter.
–  Install ceramic glow plugs using U/J extension and socket 10 mm -3220-.
After the test has been completed:
  Note
Disconnecting the central connector for unit injectors causes faults to be stored. Therefore read and clear fault memory.
–  Connect the vehicle diagnosis and service information system -VAS 5051-.
–  Carry out the vehicle system test → Vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system VAS 5051“Guided fault finding”.
–  Finish the vehicle system test so that any incorrect entries created during assembly can be deleted automatically.
–  Carry out a road test.
Observe applicable safety precautions during road test → Chapter.
–  Carry out road test.
–  Then carry out the vehicle system test again and correct any faults that have been created.
