Removing and installing camshaft oil seal
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Fitting tool -10-203-
t  Oil seal extractor -3240-
t  Torque wrench (5...50 Nm) -V.A.G 1331-
t  Torque wrench (40...200 Nm) -V.A.G 1332-
t  Bolt M12×65

Removing
–  Remove toothed belt → Chapter.
–  Remove camshaft pulley and hub → Chapter.
–  Screw inner part of oil seal extractor -3240- two turns (approx. 3 mm) out of outer part and lock with knurled screw.
   
–  Lubricate threaded head of oil seal extractor, place it in position and exerting firm pressure screw it into oil seal as far as possible.
–  Loosen knurled screw and turn inner part against camshaft until the oil seal is pulled out.
Installing
  Note
The oil seal sealing lip must not be additionally oiled or greased.
–  Remove oil residue from camshaft journal using a clean cloth.
–  Mask off groove on taper of camshaft using commercial adhesive tape (e.g. Sellotape).
–  Fit oil seal carefully on camshaft.

–  Press in oil seal with press piece of fitting tool -10-203- and bolt M12×65 onto stop.
–  Install camshaft pulley and hub → Chapter.
–  Install toothed belt and adjust valve timing → Chapter.
