Removing
  Note
To perform these tasks, the battery earth strap must be removed. Therefore check whether a coded radio is fitted. Where necessary, check the anti-theft coding first.
–  The engine is removed forwards together with the gearbox.
–  Disconnect earth wire at battery with ignition switched off.
–  All the cable fixings that are opened or cut during removal of the engine must be fitted in the same position when reinstalling the engine.
–  Remove air filter → Chapter .
–  Remove battery and battery retainer:
–  Open and close the compensation tank cap to release pressure in cooling system.
–  Remove all of the electrical cables from the gearbox, alternator, and starter motor leaving them uncovered.
–  Disconnect all other electrical connections as necessary from engine and lay to one side.
  WARNING
Fuel supply lines are pressurised! Wear safety gloves and glasses to avoid injury and contact with skin. Before loosening hose connections, wrap a cloth around the connection. Then release pressure by carefully pulling hose off connection.
–  Remove the solenoid 1 for active carbon filter -N80- hose from the throttle control unit.
   
–  Remove the fuel return pipe and the supply pipe -1- and -2- and the hose to solenoid 1 for active carbon filter -N80--3-.
–  Cover the disconnected fuel lines immediately to avoid the penetration of dirt into the fuel system.
–  Observe rules for cleanliness → Chapter
–  Disconnect vacuum and breather flexible hoses from the engine.
–  Pull connector off thermo-switch and radiator fan.
–  Remove engine antisplash cover .
–  Remove front exhaust pipe section from exhaust manifold → Chapter.

–  Desatornillar el apoyo pendular -flechas-.
–  Remove the gear selection mechanism: → 5 speed manual gearbox 02T; Rep. Gr.34
–  Remove the slave cylinder from the hydraulic clutch: → 5 speed manual gearbox 02T; Rep. Gr.30
  Note
Do not depress the clutch pedal.
–  Drain coolant → Chapter.
–  Disconnect the coolant hoses using the hose clip pliers -VAS 5024A-.
Vehicles with air conditioning
–  Poly-V belt: removing → Chapter
–  Desmontar de su soporte el compresor de aire acondicionado con las tuberías de agente frigorífico acopladas: → Calefacción, aire acondicionado.; Rep. Gr.87.
–  Observe additional information and installation instructions → Chapter.
All vehicles (continued)
–  Remove the right and left axle shafts from the gearbox and tie them out of the way: → Running gear, axles, steering; Rep. Gr.40.
–  Remove the lock carrier plate and the attached pieces: → Bodywork, exterior fitting work; Rep. Gr.50.
–  Colocar el radiador, condensador y compresor hacia el lado, de forma que no queden aprisionadas las tuberías y tubos flexibles del agente frigorífico.

–  Hook the suspension device -2024 A- as described below and lift slightly with the workshop crane:
Pulley side: 1st hole on perforated flange in position 1
Flywheel side: 2nd  hole on perforated flange in position 5
  Caution
Insert safety pins -arrows- into the hooks and bolts to prevent damage to the engine and vehicle.
  Note
t  The positions numbered 1 – 4 of the hoisting bar face the pulley.
t  The holes in the perforated flanges are counted starting from the hook.

–  Remove the engine assembly from the engine bearing -arrows-.

–  Remove the engine assembly from the gearbox bearing -arrows-.
–  Lower the engine until it is released from the gearbox mounting.
–  Withdraw the engine assembly towards the front. During this procedure, turn and lower the engine assembly as necessary.
  Note
When the assembly is lifted out, it must be carefully guided to prevent damage to bodywork.
Engine: securing the engine to engine bracket
For assembly work, the engine must be secured to the engine and gearbox support -VAS 6095-.
Work sequence
–  Free the gearbox.
–  Secure the engine to the engine and gearbox support -VAS 6095-.
