Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Nozzle of the cable harness repair set -VAS 1978-

To replace the engine control unit, connect the → Vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system VAS 5051 and initiate the guided function “Replacing control unit”.
Removal:
–  Switch off ignition.
–  Remove the windscreen wiper support arms and the cover for the water channel: → Electrical system; Rep. Gr.92
–  Remove plenum chamber bulkhead → Bodywork - fitting work; Rep. Gr.50
  Note
The thread on the breakaway bolts has been treated with a threadlocker. The effect of the threadlocker is reduced by heating the breakaway bolts with a hot air gun.
  Caution
Cover the cables, connectors and control units close to the engine control unit to prevent them from burning.
Carry out the adjustments on the hot air blower -4- as described below:
  W00-0447
–  Turn the temperature control button -2- to the maximum heating power (600 °C).
–  Set the two-level switch for air flow -3- to position 3.
  WARNING
When heating the headless bolts, other parts of the protective shell are also heated considerably. Wear protective gloves to avoid burns.
–  Place the nozzle of the hot air blower near the headless bolt.
–  Connect the hot air blower and heat the bolt for approximately 20 to 25 seconds.
–  Unscrew the headless bolt with pliers on the head of the bolt.
The procedure for the second headless bolt is the same.

If the bolts cannot be loosened, the heads of the split bolts must be sawn to create two flat parallel surfaces -arrows-, after which they can be loosened.

–  Insert a screwdriver -A- between the protective cover and the retention plate -arrow-.

–  Lift the protective cover by levering it with a screwdriver -A-, and remove it from the retention plate sideways -arrow-.

–  Open the lock slightly -1-.
–  Then remove the engine control unit from the support -arrow-.
–  Release and remove the engine control unit connectors.
Fitting
–  Unlock the engine control unit connectors and pull them off.
–  Fit the engine control unit onto the retention plate.

–  Fasten the lock -1- onto the engine control unit.
–  Mount the protective cover on the retention plate.

–  Tighten the headless bolts -1- evenly, until the bolt heads break off.
–  Install plenum chamber bulkhead → Body repairs; Rep. Gr.50
–  Fit the windscreen wiper support arms and the cover for the water channel: → Electrical system; Rep. Gr.92
–  When replacing the engine control unit, erase the self adapting values and adapt to the engine control unit → Vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system VAS 5051“Guided function”
–  Consult fault memory; if necessary, repair any faults and then erase fault memory → Vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system VAS 5051“guided fault finding”
–  After deleting the fault memory, the conformance code must be generated.
–  Take vehicle for a test drive.
–  Interrogate the control unit fault memory again.
