Removing and installing fuel tank with attached components
Removing and installing fuel tank with attached components

Check the tool and equipment equivalence table according to the applicability between Seat / VW / Audi / Skoda → Chapter
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  counterhold -T10038-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Torque wrench -VAG 1331-, see equivalent → Anchor.
t  Hydraulic jack -VAG 1383A-, see equivalent → Anchor

Removing
–  Observe all safety precautions and rules for cleanliness → Chapter.
  Caution
Risk of severe damage to the electronic components when disconnecting the battery.
Follow the adapted methods before disconnecting the battery.
   
–  Disconnect battery earth cable -arrow- with ignition switched off.
  WARNING
Risk of accident caused by weight of fuel tank
Fuel tank must be empty when it is removed.
–  Drain fuel tank → Chapter.
–  If necessary, fold forward right backrest of rear seat bench.

–  Unscrew cover for flange -arrows-.

–  Extract the connector -arrow- from the fuel delivery unit.

–  Open tank flap.
–  Clean area around fuel filler neck.
–  Remove filler cap -arrow- from fuel filler neck.
  Note
Seal off opening of fuel filler neck with a piece of clean foam to prevent dirt from dropping into the tank.

–  Remove right rear wheel.
–  Remove the right rear wheel well: → Bodywork, exterior fitting work; Rep. gr.66 .
–  Remove bolts -1- and -2- for fuel filler neck.
  WARNING
The vehicle must be secured to the lifting platform, else the it could slip.

–  Secure the vehicle with support tool -T10038- on both sides of the lifting platform.

–  Remove the underbody plate -arrows-.

–  Remove cover -1- from underside of vehicle (right-side).
–  Remove rear section of exhaust system .
–  Remove rear shaft: → Running gear, shaft, direction; Rep. gr.42.

–  Disengage the front right handbrake cable on the fuel tank at the places indicated with -arrows-.

–  Remove the fuel vent pipe -1- and the front right fuel line -2- on the fuel tank. Also press the release tabs.
  WARNING
Injury risk! Fuel is subjected to high pressure!
To reduce the pressure in the fuel system, wrap a clean cloth around the connection and carefully loosen the connection.

–  Use engine/gearbox jack -VAG 1383A- to support fuel tank.
–  Support the fuel tank using the engine and gearbox jack -VAG 1383A-.
  WARNING
Risk of accident caused by weight of fuel tank
Fuel tank must be empty when it is removed.

–  Remove bolts -1 ... 4- and detach bracket -5- for exhaust system.
–  Then lower fuel tank using engine and gearbox jack -VAG 1383A-, simultaneously guiding fuel tank down by hand.
Installing
l  Tightening torque → Chapter
Installation is carried out in the reverse sequence; note the following:
–  Check that fuel lines are engaged on the fuel tank.

–  Place the fuel tank with the securing straps on the vehicle body using the engine and gearbox jack -VAG 1383A-.
–  When installing fuel tank, make sure that fuel filler neck is correctly inserted into opening on body.
–  Attach bracket -5- for exhaust system and tighten securing strap bolts -1 ... 4-.

–  Connections -1- and -2- on filler neck must be free of corrosion to ensure proper earth connection to body.
–  Tighten bolts -1- and -2- for fuel filler neck.
  WARNING
Risk of explosion caused by electrostatic discharge.
After installation, use an ohmmeter to check the electrical connection between the metal ring on the fuel filler neck and a bare metal part on the body:
Specification: Approx. 0 Ω
–  Fit the rear axle → Rep. gr.42.
–  Install rear section of exhaust system.
–  Install the right rear wheel housing: → Bodywork, exterior fitting work; Rep. gr.66 .
–  Mount the rear wheel.
–  Install cover for flange → Fig..
–  Connect battery (observe notes on procedure for connecting the battery → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27).
