Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Wrench -T10202-

t  Torque wrench (40 - 200 Nm) -V.A.G 1332-, see equivalent → Anchor
removing
l  The fuel tank must not be more than 3/4 full.
  Note
t  Observe the safety precautions before starting work → Chapter.
t  Observe rules for cleanliness → Chapter.
t  If necessary, drain the tank → Chapter.
–  Remove the seat base → Bodywork, interior fitting work; Rep. Gr.72.

–  Remove the cover -1- of the fuel delivery unit together with the fuel pump control unit -2-.
  WARNING
Fuel supply pipes are pressurised. Wear safety goggles and appropriate clothing to avoid injury and contact with skin. Before loosening hose connections, wrap a cloth around the connection. Then eliminate the pressure by carefully separating the pipe.

–  Pull connector -1- off as well as fuel lines -2 and 3- from flange.
  Note
Press safety buttons to release fuel lines.

–  Open the sealing ring with the spanner -T10202-, and lift the flange slightly.
–  Pull fuel delivery unit and seal out of their housing in fuel tank.
  Note
t  When removing the fuel delivery unit, ensure that the fuel gauge sender is not bent.
t  If the fuel delivery unit is to be renewed then drain the old unit before disposal.
Fitting
Installing the fuel delivery unit is carried out in the reverse order. The following must be taken into account:
t  Take care not to bend the fuel gauge sender when fitting fuel delivery unit.
t  Insert dry seal for fuel delivery unit into opening of fuel tank.
t  Moisten seal with fuel only when installing fuel delivery unit.
t  Note installation position of fuel delivery unit flange → Fig.
t  Do not interchange supply and return hose (return hose blue or blue markings, supply hose black).
t  Ensure that wiring connections are securely seated.
t  If the fuel delivery unit has been replaced, the engine control unit must be adapted to the fuel pump → Vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system VAS 5051“Guided function”.

The mark -3- on the gauge is opposite to flow.
Fuel return pipe blue or blue mark -1-
