Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Pliers for spring-loaded band-type clamps -VAS 6499-, see equivalent → Anchor

t  Extractor -T40039-, see equivalent → Anchor
Removing
–  Remove engine cover. → Chapter
Vehicles with engine codes BWJ, CDLD, CDLA
–  Remove the air circulation duct on the turbo-charger → Item
  W00-1303
Continued for all vehicles
–  Unscrew bolts -arrows-.
–  Remove the ignition coils with output stages → Chapter.

–  Release the activated carbon filter hose -2- from the cylinder head cover.
–  Release the engine block breather hoses -3 and 4- from the cylinder head cover.

–  Loosen the engine block breather hose with heat shield from the turbocharger -1-.
–  Release the engine block breather hose -2- from the cylinder head cover, and remove it.
–  Release the activated carbon filter hose which leads to the turbocharger from the cylinder head cover -3-.
–  Release the cylinder head cover from the outside inwards.
–  Remove cylinder head cover.
Installing
Installation is carried out in the reverse order; noting the following in the process:

Replace gaskets for cylinder head cover if damaged.
–  Tighten the cylinder head cover in several stages, starting from the inside outwards.
–  Ensure that the top guard of the notched belt is correctly seated.
