  WARNING
Steam may be released when opening the expansion tank. Wear eye protection and protective clothing to avoid eye injuries and scalding. Cover the cap with a cloth and open carefully.
–  Switch off ignition.
  W00-10228
–  Unscrew the securing bolts -arrows- and remove the engine soundproofing..
–  Open cap on coolant expansion tank.
–  Place the drip tray -VAS 6208- under the engine.
  N10-10358
–  Remove left charge air hose as well as the clamps -arrows-.
  Note
Cove the charged air cooler and the hose with a clean cloth to prevent water entering.

Filling
  Note
The water used for the mixture has a significant influence on the affectivity of the cooling agent. Due to the different contents in the various countries that may even deviate from region to region, Volkswagen has decided to define the quality of the water to be used in the coolant system. Distilled water fulfils all requirements. It is therefore recommended that purified water is mixed with the coolant whenever an older model's coolant is toped up or replaced. On newer vehicle models (production year 2010 ►), the use of purified water is absolutely essential.
  Caution
Only distilled water may be mixed with G12 plus-plus. The use of distilled water ensures optimum protection against corrosion.
  Note
t  Only use antifreeze additive G 12 plus-plus according to specification TL VW 774 G.
t  Coolant additives marked conforming to „TL VW 774 G“ or conforming to „TL VW 774 F“ prevent frost and corrosion damage, scaling and also raise boiling point of coolant. For these reasons, the cooling system must be filled all-year-round with a coolant and corrosion protection additives.
t  Thanks to this rise in the boiling point, the coolant guarantees good running, even when the engine undergoes heavy strain, especially in countries with tropical climates.
t  The antifreeze protection must be guaranteed to approx. - 25 ºC (down to approx. -35 ℃ in countries with arctic climate).
t  The concentration of the coolant must not be reduced by adding water in summer or in countries with hot climates. The percentage of antifreeze additive must be at least 40%.
t  If, for climatic reasons, greater antifreeze protection is needed, the percentage of G 12 plus can be increased, but only up to 60% (antifreeze protection to -40 °C). If the proportion is greater, the cooling and anti-freeze protection capacity is reduced.
t  The Refractometer -T10007- is recommended for determining the current anti-freeze density.
t  If radiator, heat exchanger, cylinder head or cylinder head gasket has been replaced, do not reuse old coolant.

–  Slowly fill coolant to upper marking of shaded field on expansion tank.
–  Close expansion tank.
–  Start the engine and keep the engine speed at approx. 2000 / min for approx. 3 minutes.
–  Let the engine run untilcoolant fan -V7- cuts in.
  WARNING
Steam may be released when opening the expansion tank. Wear safety goggles and appropriate clothing to avoid injury to eyes and burns. Cover the cap with a cloth and open carefully.
–  Check coolant level and top up any missing coolant, if necessary. When the engine is at normal operating temperature, the coolant level must be at the top mark, and when the engine is cold, in the middle of the shaded area.
