Support elements with hydraulic compensation: Check
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Calibre
  Note
t  Replace hydraulic cam followers as a set. (They cannot be adjusted or repaired individually.)
t  An unusual sound from the valves while starting the engine is normal.
Checking sequence
–  Start engine and run until the radiator fan has switched on once.
–  Increase engine speed to about 2500 rpm for 2 minutes: if necessary, perform road test.
  Note
If the irregular valve noises stop but recur repeatedly during short trips, replace the oil retention valve on the oil filter bracket . → Item
If the hydraulic compensation elements are still noisy, determine the defective element as follows:
–  Remove cylinder head cover → Chapter
–  Turn crankshaft until the cams for the support element to be checked stand on the top. To do this move the vehicle forwards in 4th gear with ignition switched off.
–  Determine clearance between cam and roller rocker finger.

–  Push roller rocker finger with screwdriver downwards -arrow-.
If an 0.20 mm feeler gauge can be inserted between camshaft and roller rocker finger:
–  Renew support element → Chapter ; Camshaft: removing and fitting.
  Note
t  After installing the camshaft wait for approx. 30 minutes before starting engine. The hydraulic valve compensation elements will have to settle (otherwise, the valves could rest on the pistons).
t  After working on the valve gear, turn the engine carefully at least 2 rotations to ensure that none of the valves make contact when the starter is operated.
