Communication between the engine control unit and all the control units compatible the data bus is produced via a CAN data bus.
Data bus compatible control units are connected together via two data bus wires twisted together (CAN_high and CAN_low) and exchange information (messages). Information not available in the data bus will be recognised as a fault by the engine control unit as well as other CAN data bus control units.
Test conditions
l  Using the self-diagnosis for the CAN data bus, a fault has been detected: → VAS 5051; Vehicle self-diagnosis.
Verification process
–  Switch ignition off.
–  Free the connections from the control unit and extract them.

–  Connect test box -V.A.G 1598/31- to engine control unit. The engine control unit wiring harness is not connected.
–  Check the central final resistance incorporated in the engine control unit:
  E01-0168
Test box -V.A.G 1598/31-,
test box socket
Test box -V.A.G 1598/31-,
test box socket
5860
Specification: 60 … 72 Ω

If the resistance measurement is outside the specified range:
–  Replace engine control unit: → VAS 5051; Vehicle self-diagnosis.
If the resistance value is within the specified range:
–  Eliminate the fault from the wiring using the current flow diagrams: → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations.
