Interrogating and erasing fault memory:
Interrogating and erasing fault memory:
Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Fault reader -V.A.G 1551- (or vehicle system tester -V.A.G 1552-) with cable -V.A.G 1551/3B-
Work sequence
–  Connect fault reader -V.A.G 1551- (-V.A.G 1552-) and select engine electronics control unit with the “address code” 01. When doing so, the engine should be idling. Fault reader: Connecting and selecting the engine electronics control unit → Chapter.
Only when engine does not start:
–  Operate the starter for about 6 seconds. Then do not switch the ignition off.
–  Switch the fault reader printer on by pressing the Print key. The warning lamp in the key must light up.

Indicated on the display:
–  Operate the fault reader taking into account the information on the display:
–  Select function mode 1 “ Rapid data transfer”.
–  Press keys 0 and 1 for function “Engine Electronics” and confirm entry with the Q key.
–  Press the key.

Indicated on the display:
–  Press keys 0 and 2 for function “Interrogate fault memory” and confirm entry with the Q key.

The display will show either the number of faults stored or “No fault recognised”.
–  Press the key.
If one or more faults are stored:
The stored faults will be displayed and printed out one after the other.
 
X faults recognised                     
After the stored faults have been printed out, the display will show:
–  Press keys 0 and 5 for the function “Erase fault memory” and confirm entry with the Q key.
  Note!
If the ignition is switched off between “Interrogate fault memory” and “Erase fault memory” the fault memory will not be erased.

–  Press the key.

Indicated on the display:
–  Press keys 0 and 6 for the “End output” function and confirm input with the Q key.
–  Correct faults printed out using fault table → Chapter
–  After rectifying faults, a test drive should be carried out.
–  During the test drive, the following operating conditions must be fulfilled:
t  The coolant temperature must exceed 80 °C.
t  When the temperature is reached, the operating conditions must be reached several times Idling Part throttle Full throttle Deceleration
t  At full throttle, revolutions must exceed 3,500 rpm.
–  Again interrogate the control unit fault memory.
If no fault is stored:
–  Press the key.

Indicated on the display:
–  Press keys 0 and 6 for the “End output” function and confirm input with the Q key.
–  Switch off ignition.
  Note!
If the self-diagnosis has not detected faults, you must refer to the corresponding fault table in “Fault finding, Engine” folder to continue with fault finding.
