Final control diagnosis: carrying out
During final control diagnostic the following component is activated:
1. Activated charcoal filter solenoid valve -N80-.
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Fault reader -V.A.G 1551- or Vehicle systems checker -V.A.G 1552- with Lead -V.A.G 1551/3B-
t  Test box -V.A.G 1598/22-
t  Hand-held multimeter -V.A.G 1526 A- or Multimeter -V.A.G 1315 A-
t  Diode test lamp -V.A.G 1527 B-
t  Auxiliary measurement set -V.A.G 1594 C-
t  Wiring diagram

Test conditions
   
l  Fuses 15 and 18, OK. Fuses in battery fuse box, OK.
l  Battery voltage, 11.5 V minimum
l  All electrical consumers, for example lights and heated rear window, must be off.
l  On vehicles with air conditioner, the AC must be off.
  Note!
t  Final control diagnosis can only be carried out with the engine off and the ignition on.
t  Final control diagnosis is interrupted if the engine is started up or a turnover pulse detected.
t  During final control diagnosis the activated charcoal filter solenoid valve is activated for about 60 seconds, if final control diagnosis is not ended by pressing →.
t  The final control is checked by sound or touch.
t  The electric fuel pump runs throughout final control diagnosis.
t  Final control diagnosis is interrupted after about 10 minutes.
t  To repeat final control diagnosis, let the engine run for a while.
Work sequence
–  Connect the -V.A.G 1551- (V.A.G. 1552). Switch on the ignition and enter “address code” 01 to select the engine control unit. (Fault reader: Connecting and selecting the engine control unit → Chapter.).

The display reads:
–  Operate the fault reader bearing in mind the message on the display:
–  Press 0 and 3 for “Final control diagnostic”.

The display reads:
Activate the activated charcoal filter solenoid valve -N80-
–  Press Q to confirm the entry.

03 - Final control diagnosis
The display reads:
The fuel tank deaeration solenoid valve should click until you press → to end final control diagnosis.
If the solenoid valve clicks:
–  Press →.
  
Final control diagnosis               ->
Tank ventilation valve N80
The display reads:
–  Press →.
  
Rapid data transmission             HELP
Select function XX
The display reads:
–  Press 0 and 6 for the function “End data transmission” and press Q to confirm the entry.
–  Switch off the ignition.
If the solenoid valve does not click:

–  Unplug the double connector from the activated charcoal filter solenoid valve -N80--arrow-.

–  Plug the diode lamp -V.A.G 1527 B- into the unplugged connector with auxiliary leads -V.A.G 1594 C-. The diode should flash (brighten and dim).
The diode lamp flashes:
–  Continue final control diagnosis to the end.
–  Switch off the ignition.
–  Replace the solenoid valve -N80-: → Rep. Gr.20.
–  Consult the fault memory; eliminate any faults and clear the memory → Chapter.
The diode lamp does not flash:
–  Continue final control diagnosis to the end.
–  Switch off the ignition.

–  Connect test box -V.A.G 1598/22- to the control unit wiring harness.
  N24-0709
–  Test for open circuits in the wiring between the test box female contact 14+double contact connector contact 2 following the wiring diagram. Wiring resistance: 1.5 Ω∼max.
–  Also test the wire for short circuits to battery positive and earth. Target value: ∞ Ω
–  Test for open circuits in the wiring between the double connector contact 1 and the main junction box, following the wiring diagram. Wiring resistance: 1.5 Ω max.
If no fault is found in the wiring:
–  Replace the engine control unit → Chapter.
