Removing and installing shock absorbers
Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1332-
Carry out the following work:
Removal:
–  Loosen wheel bolts.
–  Raise the vehicle.
–  Remove wheel.
–  Remove rear wheel housing liner → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. gr.66.
–  Remove coil springs → Chapter.

–  Remove bolts -1- for shock absorber -2-.

–  Remove bolt -arrow-.
–  Remove shock absorber.
Installation
Installation is carried out in reverse order. In the process, note the following:
The shock absorber may be bolted to the wheel bearing housing only when dimension „a“ has been attained → Fig..

–  Install shock absorber -2- and tighten bolts -1-.

–  Tighten bolt -arrow-.
–  Install coil spring → .
–  Install rear wheel housing liner → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. gr.66.
–  Fit and secure wheel → Chapter.

Specified torques
ComponentTightening torque
Shock absorber to body
t  Use new bolts.
50 Nm and then turn 45° further
Shock absorber to wheel bearing housing180 Nm
