Open-end spanner attachment -V.A.G 1923-
t
Torque wrench -V.A.G 1332-, see equivalence → Anchor
The left and right track rods are identical.
They can be removed and installed with the steering box in the vehicle.
Removal:
–
Remove front wheel.
–
Remove hexagon bolt -3- and detach bolt connection -4-.
Note
Do not attempt to enlarge slots in wheel bearing housing using a chisel or similar.

Pull the steering link for detaching the steering rod or press down.
Note
t
Do not use any chisel or similar tool between the steering rod -1- and the washer -2- of the joint of the track rod to adjust the track rod. That would damage the washer.

To separate the track rod from the steering rod, use only a wooden head or rubber hammer to apply pressure or to impact the stud end of the track rod.

Remove water tank cover.

Open hose clips -arrows- (spring-type clip and clip with lug fastener) on rubber boot.

Pull out the boot outwards as far as it will go.

Unscrew track rod using open-end spanner attachment -V.A.G 1923-.
Installation
–
Screw in tie rod and tighten to specified tightening torque → Item
–
Observe the following when installing the boot:
-
the smaller diameter of the rubber boot clips into the groove on the track rod
-
the boot is not twisted.
–
Replace spring clip and clip with lug fastener.
–
Mount the cover of the track rod.
–
Align the track rod such that the joint is at the assembly position.
–
Insert the track rod up to the stop in the steering rod.
Note
Mount the track rod (only by hand) in the track control link -1-, the washer -2- of the track rod head must not bear the load.

Install bolted connection -4- and tighten nut to specified tightening torque. → Item

Screw in bolt -3- and tighten to specified tightening torque. → Item
