Checking steering column for damage > < Check the basic setting of the steering angle transmitter G85 once the following fitting work has been carried out:

  WARNING
t  These instructions for handling the steering column MUST be observed at all times.
t  Incorrect handling can damage the steering column and thus cause a safety risk.
   
Correct handling and transportation of steering column
t  Hold the column with both hands.
t  Hold steering column upper jacket tube and in area of upper universal joint.

Improper handling of steering column
The column will be damaged if held by the following components:
1 - Clamping lever
2 - Counterweight springs
3 - Deformation element

Improper handling of steering column with safety risks
The cross member sleeves of the lower column bearing could be damaged under the following conditions:
t  Transporting steering column with one hand on jointed shaft.
t  Bending joints more than 90°.
