Run flat tyres (tyres with emergency running characteristics) > < Tyre damage
Match balancing
Match balancing
General information
If the radial or axial run-out of the wheel rim and the tyre are the same, this will accentuate the concentricity fault in the whole wheel.
For technical reasons, 100% true running is not possible → Chapter.
Before matching wheels already mounted and run on a vehicle, warm up the tyres. This will eliminate any flat spots caused by storage or handling, → Chapter.
Match balancing process
–  Let air out of tyre.
–  Press tyre beads off wheel rim flanges.
–  Coat the tyre bead all round with tyre fitting paste.
–  Turn the tyre 180° with respect to the rim.
–  Pump up tyre to approx. 4 bar.
–  Fasten the whole wheel on the balancer.
–  Check wheel for true running and for radial and lateral runout .
  Note
t  If the theoretical values for radial and axial run-out are not exceeded, the wheel can be balanced to 0 grammes. The nominal values are specified in → Anchor.
t  Turn wheel again if the radial or axial runout exceeds the nominal values.
–  Deflate the tyre and separate the tyre bead from the rim contour tabs
–  Rotate the tyre 90° relative to the wheel (1/4 of a turn).
–  Inflate the tyre to 4 bars again and check the concentricity.
  Note
t  If the theoretical values for radial and axial run-out are not exceeded, the wheel can be balanced to 0 grammes.
t  Turn wheel again of the axial or radial runout still exceeds the nominal values .
–  Press tyre off wheel rim flange again as described above.
–  Rotate the tyre 180° with respect to the wheel (1/2 a turn).
If the radial and/or lateral runout are still not within the specified values, check the disc wheel for radial and/or lateral runout: → Chapter.
If the measured values for radial and lateral run-out of the wheel are within the specified values, the tyre has an impermissibly high radial or lateral run-out. In this case, the tyre must be renewed.
  Note
t  After fitting the tyres there will be fitting lubricant between the tyres and the rim flanges.
t  For this reason, severe braking and acceleration manoeuvres must be avoided for the first 100 or 200 km driven. The tyres may otherwise rotate on the rims and the work will have been in vain.
