Steering column electronics control unit -J527- (SLMS) removing and installing
Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Torque screwdriver - VAG 1624-
Removing:
  Caution
The removal and installation of components belonging to the steering column switch must be carried out in a specific order → Chapter.
  WARNING
t  Danger due to airbag activation.
t  When work is carried out on the airbag unit incorrectly, there is a risk that the airbag triggers.
t  Observe the safety measures when working on the airbag → Bodywork, interior fitting work; Rep. gr.69 .
–  Disconnect battery . → Chapter
remove the following components one after another:
–  Remove the steering wheel → Bodywork, interior assembly work; Rep. gr.69 .

–  Remove the steering column trim → Bodywork, interior assembly work; Rep. gr. 68.
–  Depending on the vehicle equipment, disconnect the connector from the mounts -1-, -2-, -3- and -4-.
  Note
When installing the steering column electronics control unit -J527- the coil must not move from the centre position. The front wheels must be positioned „straight ahead“.
–  Loosen the 3 fixing screws -arrows- and remove the steering column electronics control unit -J527- to the rear of the steering column switch.
Installation:
Installation is carried out in the reverse order, noting the following:
  Caution
The return lever of the indicator switch may get damaged when installing the control unit.
The indicator lever must be located in the 0 position for installing the control unit so that the return lever is not open.
–  Insert the Steering column electronics control unit -J527- straight into the steering column switch.

–  Tighten the three fixing screws of the steering column electronics control unit -J527- on the switch module of the steering column to a tightening torque of 1.5 Nm.
  Caution
If a steering column electronics control unit -J527- is installed that has been supplied by the spare parts department, the safety lock -5- must be removed immediately before installing the steering wheel.
–  Install all parts in reverse order of removal.
