Removing and installing battery
Removal
–  Switch off ignition and remove key.
–  Remove the carpet in the luggage compartment
   
–  Remove the rear mould part for the tools -1- under the carpet cover in the luggage compartment.
–  Unscrew the fastening nuts of the spare wheel -2-.
–  Remove the spare wheel from the vehicle.

–  Remove the rear mould part for the tools -1- under the spare wheel.

–  Unscrew the four fixing screws -1- of the battery support so that the bracket can be removed.

–  Remove the battery cover and the cover of the negative pole -2-, for this purpose, disengage the retaining tags -arrows- and remove the cover upwards.
–  Remove the cover of the positive pole -1-, for this purpose, disengage the retaining tag -arrows- and remove the cover upwards.

–  Loosen the nut -2- by a couple of turns and disconnect the cable clamp from the negative battery terminal.
–  Loosen the nut -1- by a couple of turns and disconnect the cable clamp from the positive battery terminal.
–  Remove the hose for the central degassing -3-.
–  Unscrew bolt -4- on battery retainer plate -5-.
–  Pull battery out of fastening strip of battery bracket.
–  Remove the battery out of the luggage compartment.
  WARNING
Observe environmental requirements.
When disposing of used batteries, always observe the required disposal procedures for batteries and sulphuric acid → Electrical system; General information; Rep. gr.27.
Installing
Installation is carried out in reverse order, noting the following:

t  Only install maintenance-free batteries with the specifications „TL82506“ (from December 1997 onwards) and „VW75073“ (from August 2001 onwards).
t  If a leakproof, deep-cycle VRLA or AGM battery was fitted as original equipment, this type of battery must also be installed as a replacement.

–  Fit battery into battery carrier.
l  Lug in battery support must be inserted behind -arrow- into recess on battery base strip -1-.
l  It should no longer be possible to move battery.

l  The battery has been correctly inserted if the centre recess of the bottom battery base strip is aligned with the tapped hole in the battery bracket -arrows-.
–  Fit battery bracket.

l  Lug at battery bracket must engage in recess on the bottom battery base strip.
–  Tighten bolt -4- at battery bracket -5-.
–  Connect hose -3- for central gas venting system. Observe notes in → Electrical system; General information; Rep. gr.27.
Connect up battery in the following sequence with ignition and electricity consumers switched off:
–  Start by connecting pole shoe -1- of positive wire by hand to battery positive terminal „+“ and tighten nut.
–  Position terminal -2- on earth lead on negative „-“ pole of battery by hand and tighten nut.
–  After installation, check that battery is securely attached → Electrical system; General information; Rep. gr.27.
The following measures must be carried out after re-connecting battery:
t  Observe measures to be performed before starting the engine for the first time - see → Owner's Manual.
t  Activate automatic open/close function of electric window lifters → Owner's Manual
t  Synchronise radio-operated remote control - see → Owner's Manual.
t  Interrogate fault memories of all control units and erase „Low voltage“ fault if necessary → Vehicle diagnostic tester.
  Note
After reconnecting the voltage supply, it is possible that the ESP warning lamp will not go out until the vehicle has been driven several metres.
