Disconnecting and reconnecting battery
Disconnecting and reconnecting battery
  Note
t  By disconnecting the earth strap (power interrupted), safety is guaranteed while working on the electrical system.
t  The battery positive only needs to be disconnected if the battery is to be removed.
t  The earth strap must not be disconnected from the bodywork.
Disconnecting
–  Switch off ignition and remove key.
–  Remove the carpet in the luggage compartment
   
–  Detach the securing nut of the spare wheel -2-: for this procedure, the rear moulding for the tools -1- must not be removed.
–  Remove the spare wheel from the vehicle.
  Note
In order to guarantee safety during work on the electrical system, the battery earth strap is disconnected. In this case, the retainer of battery -2- must be removed.

–  Unscrew the four fixing screws -1- of the battery support so that the bracket can be removed.

–  Only lift the cover of the battery negative pole -2-, disengage the retaining tag -arrows- for this purpose.
–  Lift the cover of the battery negative pole -1-, disengage the retaining tag -arrows- for this purpose.

–  Loosen the nut -2- by a couple of turns and disconnect the cable clamp from the negative battery terminal.
–  Loosen the nut -1- by a couple of turns and disconnect the cable clamp from the positive battery terminal.
Disregard -items 3, 4 and 5-.
Connecting
–  The connecting is carried out in the reverse sequence; note the following:
The following measures must be carried out after re-connecting battery:
t  Observe measures to be performed before starting the engine for the first time - see → Owner's Manual.
t  Activate automatic open/close function of electric window lifters → Owner's Manual
t  Synchronise radio-operated remote control - see → Owner's Manual.
t  Interrogate fault memories of all control units and erase „Low voltage“ fault if necessary → Vehicle diagnostic tester.
  Note
After reconnecting the voltage supply, it is possible that the ESP warning lamp will not go out until the vehicle has been driven several metres.
