Battery isolation igniter -N253-: remove and install
Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system -VAS -
Removing:
  WARNING
t  The safety guidelines must be observed with regard to the pyrotechnic components.
t  Observe disposal regulations for pyrotechnic components.
–  Connecting the Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system -VAS -, → Chapter „Vehicle diagnosis, testing and information systems“.
  Note
t  If the airbag warning lamp -K75- lights up after an accident, it must be tested with the vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system -VAS -, to see whether crash data have been stored. If yes, a check should be made if the error »resistance too high« has been registered in the entry Battery isolation igniter -N253-. If this is not the case, the battery isolation igniter -N253- must be replaced.
t  The battery isolation igniter -N253- isolates the circuit electrically as soon as an airbag has been triggered. The battery isolation igniter -N253- must be replaced after each airbag replacement.
–  Switch off ignition and all electrical consumers.
–  Remove the carpet in the luggage compartment
  E97-10613
–  Remove the rear mould part for the tools -1- under the carpet cover in the luggage compartment.
–  Unscrew the fastening nuts of the spare wheel -2-.
–  Remove the spare wheel from the vehicle.
  WARNING
Always disconnect the battery when working on pyrotechnic components.
  E27-10057
–  Unscrew the four fixing screws -1- of the battery support -2- so that the bracket can be removed.
  E27-10059
–  Disconnect the negative cable of the battery → Chapter.
–  Lift the cover of the battery negative pole -1-, disengage the retaining tag -arrows- for this purpose.

Further information can be obtained under → Bodywork, interior assembly work; Rep. gr.69
  WARNING
Before handling pyrotechnic components (e.g. unplugging electrical connectors), the mechanic carrying out the work must „discharge the static“. For example, briefly make contact with the door locking wedge for this purpose.
Installing:
Installation is carried out in the reverse order. When installing observe the following:
–  Securing nuts of the battery isolation igniter -N253- specified torque: 15 Nm.
  WARNING
t  The safety guidelines must be observed with regard to the pyrotechnic components.
t  Before handling pyrotechnic components (e.g. connecting electrical connectors), the mechanic carrying out the work must „discharge the static“. For example, briefly make contact with the door locking wedge for this purpose.
  Note
Make sure that the plug connector of the battery isolation igniter -N253- is pressed up until the end. You should hear engaging.
  WARNING
The ignition must be switched off when connecting battery. If pyrotechnic components are not repaired correctly (e.g. restraint system), this may result in unwanted triggering after connecting the battery. When the battery is connected to a voltage source, nobody is allowed in the vehicle interior.
–  Connect ground line to the battery when ignition is switched off .
–  Read out the error memory of the control unit for the airbag using the → Vehicle diagnostic tester.
