Special tools, workshop equipment, test and measuring appliances and auxiliary items required

  • ◆ 3415 Counter support
  • ◆ V.A.G 1331 Torque wrench (5...50 Nm)
  • ◆ V.A.G 1332 (40...200 Nm) Torque wrench
  • ◆ AMV 174 004 01 Sealant

Removing

  • ‒ Remove intake manifold upper part:

=> Repair group 24; Servicing injection system; Removing and installing parts of injection system

Note:

Seal the intake ports in the intake manifold lower part with a clean cloth.

  • ‒ Remove air cleaner with intake hose:

=> Repair group 24; Servicing injection system; Dismantling and assembling air cleaner.

  • ‒ Remove toothed belt guard upper part.

  • ‒ → Set camshaft sprocket to TDC No. 1 cylinder by turning the crankshaft. Mark on camshaft sprocket must align with arrow on cylinder head cover.
  • ‒ Release tensioning roller and take toothed belt off camshaft sprocket.
  • ‒ Turn crankshaft back slightly.

  • ‒ → Remove camshaft sprocket. When loosening camshaft sprocket bolt, counter-hold with 3415 (first remove bolts -arrows-).
  • ‒ Remove woodruff key from camshaft.
  • ‒ Remove cylinder head cover.
  • ‒ First remove bearing caps 5, 1 and 3. Then loosen bearing caps 2 and 4 alternately and diagonally.

Installing

Conditions

  • ● The pistons must not be positioned at TDC.

V15-0098

Notes:

  • ◆ When installing the camshaft No. 1 cylinder cams must point upwards.
  • ◆ → When installing the bearing cap note offset, before installing camshaft fit bearing caps and determine fitting position.

Work sequence

  • ‒ Oil the camshaft contact surfaces.
  • ‒ Fit camshaft.
  • ‒ Tighten bearing caps 2 and 4 alternately and
    diagonally to
        20 Nm.
  • ‒ Coat contact surfaces of bearing cap 1 lightly with sealant AMV 174 004 01.
  • ‒ Install bearing caps 3, 1 and 5 and tighten to
        20 Nm.
  • ‒ Insert woodruff key in camshaft.

  • ‒ → Install the camshaft sprocket. Counter-hold with 3415 to tighten the camshaft sprocket securing bolt (first remove bolts -arrows-).
        Tightening torque: 100 Nm

Note:

When the camshaft is turned, the crankshaft must not be at TDC. Danger of damage to valves or piston crowns.

The rest of the assembly is basically a reverse of the dismantling sequence.

Installing toothed belt and adjusting valve timing .

Note:

When new tappets have been installed the engine must not be started for about 30 minutes. Hydraulic compensation elements must settle (otherwise valves will strike pistons).
