Special tools, workshop equipment, testers, measuring instruments and auxiliary items required

  • ◆ Test box V.A.G 1598/31
  • ◆ Hand multimeter V.A.G 1526 or multimeter V.A.G 1715
  • ◆ Adapter set V.A.G 1594
  • ◆ Diode test lamp V.A.G 1527

N01-0485
  • ◆ Current flow diagram

Check conditions

  • ● → Fuse No. 13 must be OK.
  • ● The battery voltage must be at least 11.5 V.
  • ● Hall sender must be OK, checking
    .
  • ● Engine speed sender must be OK, checking Page 24-58.

Note:

Ignition coils and final output stages are in a single component and cannot be renewed separately.

Test sequence

Checking voltage supply

  • ‒ → Pull 4 pin connector -2- off ignition coil to be checked -1-.
  • ‒ Using multimeter and adapter cables from V.A.G 1594 measure the supply voltage between contacts 1 + 2 and 1 + 4 of disconnected connector.
  • ‒ Switch on ignition.
        Specification: Min. 11.5 V

N28-0170
  • ‒ Switch off ignition.

If no voltage is present:

  • ‒ → Check wiring for open circuit between 4-pin connector contact 1 and current supply relay for Motronic (main relay)using current flow diagram.
        Wire resistance: max. 1.5 ω
  • ‒ Check wiring between 4-pin connector and earth for open circuit using current flow diagram.
        Contact 2 and earth
        Contact 4 and earth
        Wire resistance: Max. 1.5 ω

If there is no fault in the supply voltage:

  • ‒ Check activation

Checking activation

  • ‒ → Pull connectors off injectors.

N28-0170
  • ‒ → Connect diode test lamp V.A.G 1527 with adapter cables from V.A.G 1594 to
        Contacts 2 + 3
    of disconnected connector.
  • ‒ Operate starter and check the ignition signal from engine control unit.
        The LED must flicker
  • ‒ Switch off ignition.

When the LED flickers and the supply voltage is OK.:

N24-1200
  • ‒ Replace ignition coils with output stage

The LED does not flicker:

  • ‒ Check wiring => Page 28-13

Checking wiring

  • ‒ Remove battery.
  • ‒ → Connect test box V.A.G 1598/31 to control unit wiring harness. The engine control unit remains disconnected.

N28-0170
  • ‒ → Check wiring between test box and 4-pin connector for open circuit using current flow diagram.
        Cylinder 1 contact 3 + socket 102
        Cylinder 2 contact 3 + socket 95
        Cylinder 3 contact 3 + socket 103
        Cylinder 4 contact 3 + socket 94
    Wire resistance: Max. 1.5 ω
  • ‒ Additionally check wires for short to one another.

If no fault can be found in the wiring:

  • ‒ Renew engine control unit => Page 24-109.
