Engine operating conditions: checking
  Note!
Checks whether engine control unit recognises the engine operating modes (idling, overrun, partial throttle, full throttle).
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Fault reader -V.A.G 1551- or vehicle system tester -V.A.G 1552- with cable -V.A.G 1551/3B-
Test conditions
l  Coolant temperature, 80°C, minimum.
Checking process
–  Connect fault reader -V.A.G 1551- (-V.A.G 1552-). Start engine and enter “Address code” 01 to select engine control unit. (Fault reader: Connecting and selecting the engine control unit → Chapter.)
   
Indicated on the display:
–  Press keys 0 and 8 for the function “Read measured value block” and confirm entry with the Q key.

Indicated on the display:
–  Press keys 0, 0 and 4 for “Display group number 4” and confirm entry with the Q key.

Indicated on the display:
(1…4 = display zones)
–  Observe the 8 digit number block in display zone 4: (The 4 digits to the right are of no consequence).
Indicated in condition of:
t  Idling:
   The 2.nd position from the left must be a 1
   Note: 01000000
t  Partial throttle:
–  Rev up evenly.
   The 3.rd position from the left must be a 1
   Note: 00100000
t  Full throttle::
–  Briefly open throttle fully (throttle burst).
   The 4.th position from the left must briefly display 1
   Note: 00010000
t  Overrun mode::
–  Increase engine speed to above 3000 rpm.
–  Close throttle valve abruptly.
   As long as the engine speed is above 1400 rpm, the 1.st position from the left must be a 1
   Note: 11000000 (briefly)
  Note!
Idling speed is recognised below 1400 rpm.
–  Press the → key.
–  Press keys 0 and 6 for the “End output” function and confirm input with the Q key.
If the specifications are not attained:
–  Interrogate fault memory, if necessary, eliminate any faults and then erase fault memory. → Chapter, Fault memory: interrogating and erasing.
–  Check the throttle valve potentiometer → Chapter, Throttle valve control unit: checking.
