Oil pressure and oil pressure switch checking
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Oil pressure tester -V.A.G 1342-
t  Diode test lamp -V.A.G 1527 B-
t  auxiliary measuring set -V.A.G 1594 A- or -V.A.G 1594 C-

Checking conditions
l  Engine oil level OK, checking → Fig..
l  Engine oil temperature 80 ºC (radiator fan must have run at some time).
  Note
Check the functioning and repairing of the optical and acoustic oil pressure warning lamps → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations.
Test sequence

–  Remove oil pressure switch -F1- and screw into tester.
–  Screw tester into the cylinder head in place of the oil pressure switch.
–  Connect brown wire of tester to earth (-).
–  Connect diode test lamp -V.A.G 1527 B- using -V.A.G 1594 A- or -V.A.G 1594- aux. cables to battery positive (+) and to oil pressure switch.
LED must not light up.
–  If the LED lights up, renew oil pressure switch -F1-.
If the LED does not light up
–  Start engine and slowly increase engine revolutions. The LED should light up between 0,3-0.6 bar; if not, renew the oil pressure switch.
–  Increase engine speed further. At 2,000 rpm and an oil temperature of 80 °C the oil pressure should be at least 2.0 bar.
At higher engine speed the oil pressure must not exceed 7.0 bar. If it does so, replace the oil pump.
