Checking oil pressure and oil pressure switch
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Oil pressure tester -V.A.G 1342-
t  Diode test lamp -V.A.G 1527 B-
t  Adapter set -V.A.G 1594 A-

Check the warning lamp
With the ignition switched on and the engine stopped, the oil pressure warning lamp should light up for approx. 3 seconds and then go out. Checking is interrupted if the engine is running.
Check conditions
l  Oil level OK → Fig..
l  The oil pressure warning lamp should light up for approx. 3 seconds with the ignition switched on.
  Note!
Operation inspection and repair of visual and acoustic oil pressure indicators: → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations
l  Minimum engine oil temperature 80 °C (the radiator fan should have connected)
Checking process

–  Remove the oil pressure switch -F1- and thread it onto the tester.
–  Thread the tester in the oil filter support, instead of the oil pressure switch.
–  Connect the brown tester wire to earth (-).
–  Connect the diode lamp -V.A.G 1527 B- with auxiliary leads of the -V.A.G 1594 A- to battery positive (+) and to the oil pressure switch. The diode should not light up. If the diode lights up, replace the 1.4 bar oil pressure switch -F1-
–  Start the engine and slowly accelerate. Between 1.2…1.6 bar the diode should light up; if not, replace the oil pressure switch.
Oil pressure when idling: min. 2 bar
–  Continue to increase engine revs. At 2,000/min and with the oil at a temperature of 80 °C, the oil pressure should be between 3.0…4.5 bar.
At higher speeds, the oil pressure should not exceed 7.0 bar.
If the specification is exceeded:
–  Check the oil pipes.
–  If necessary, replace the oil pump cover with the bleed valve.
