Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Refractometer -T10007A-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Hose clamp -3094-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Coolant tester -VAG 1274B-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Adapter -VAG 1274/8-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Collecting tray -VAS 6208-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Base -VAS 6340-, see equivalent → Anchor

   
t  Torque wrench -VAG 1331-, see equivalent → Anchor.

t  Expansion tank -1K0 121 407 A- or expansion tank -1J0 121 407 B-
t  Sealing cap -191 211 343-

Prerequisites:
l  Engine cold
Checking sequence
–  Remove the soundproofing or the underbody protection → Bodywork, exterior assembly work; Rep. gr.50.
–  Drain coolant → Chapter.
–  Using the pliers -VAS 6340-, loosen the hose clip on the oil cooler.
–  Remove the oil cooler with housing → Chapter
  Note
t  Collect the leaking coolant using the drip tray for liquids -VAS 6208-.
t  Collect leaking engine oil with a cleaning cloth, if necessary.

Checking the removed state
–  Clamp housing with old seal on a suitable, level clean surface.
–  Secure sealing plug-2- to breather connection of expansion tank -1-.
–  Connect the coolant hose -3- to the oil cooler and the expansion tank.
–  Fill expansion tank up to „Max“ marking.
–  Fit the cooling tester -VAG 1274B- with the adapter -VAG 1274/8- onto the expansion tank.
–  Use hand pump on tester to create a pressure of about 1.6 bar.
–  Watch pressure drop on pressure gauge. A pressure drop within 10 minutes is not permitted.
If the pressure drops:
–  Replace the oil radiator → Chapter.
Install in reverse order of removal; note the following:
–  Renew seal for housing.
–  Check the level of coolant and top up if necessary → Chapter.
–  Check engine oil level and top-up if necessary → Chapter.
