  Note
Collect drained coolant in a clean container for re-use or disposal.
  WARNING
Hot vapour/hot coolant may escape when opening expansion tank. Cover cap with cloth and open carefully.
–  Open cap on coolant expansion tank.
  W00-0690
–  Release quick-release catches -1- and -2- and remove front sound-proofing.
  A10-1132
–  Place the drip tray -VAS 6208- under the engine.
Vehicles with coolant drain plug:
–  Open coolant drain plug on coolant hose (bottom) at radiator.
Vehicles without coolant drain plug:
–  Remove the fastening clamps-1- of theCoolant temperature element at the coolant outlet -G83--2- .
–  Pull radiator outlet coolant temperature sender -G83- out of hose connection and drain off coolant.
All vehicles (continued):
  A10-0895
–  Unscrew bolts -arrows-.for coolant expansion reservoir.
–  Disconnect connector for insufficient coolant indicator switch -F66- at bottom of coolant expansion reservoir and place to side with coolant hoses -1- and -2- connected.
  A19-10068
–  Disconnect coolant hose leading to oil cooler at the location marked with an -arrow-, and drain off remaining coolant.
filling .
  Note
t  The cooling system is filled all year round with a mixture of water and coolant additive (combined anti-freeze and corrosion protection agent).
t  It is important to use only coolant additive Plus -G 012 A8F A1- (also designated as: »G12+«) „according to TL VW 774 F“. Other coolant additives could seriously impair in particular the anti-corrosion properties. The resulting damage could lead to loss of coolant and consequently to serious engine damage.
t  Coolant additive »G12+« can be mixed up with additives »G11« and »G12«.
t  »G12+« and coolant additives marked „Conforming with specification TL VW 774 F“ prevent frost and corrosion damage and stop scale from forming. These also raise the boiling temperature. For these reasons the cooling system must be filled all year round with the correct antifreeze and anticorrosion additive.
t  Thanks to this rise in the boiling point, the coolant guarantees good running, even when the engine undergoes heavy strain, especially in countries with tropical climates.
t  Frost protection must be assured to about -25 °C (in arctic climatic countries to about -35 ℃).
t  The concentration of the coolant must not be reduced by adding water in summer or in countries with hot climates. The amount of anti-freeze in the coolant must be at least 40 %.
t  If more anti-freeze protection is required for climatic reasons, the percentage of »G12+« may be increased up to 60 % (protection to -40 ºC) If the percentage is higher then the cooling and anti-freeze capacities are reduced.
t  Use only clean water for mixing the coolant.
t  If radiator, heat exchanger, cylinder head, cylinder head gasket or cylinder block is replaced, do not reuse old coolant.
t  Contaminated or dirty coolant must not be used again.
t  Use refractometer -T10007- to check frost protection of coolant additive »G12+« in cooling system.
t  Secure all screw joints with serial hose clips → Spare parts catalogue.

Operation process
Vehicles with coolant drain plug:
–  Close coolant drain plug at coolant hose (bottom) on radiator.
Vehicles without coolant drain plug:
–  Install coolant temperature sensor on radiator outlet -G83--2- with new O-ring in fitting and secure with retaining clamp -1-.
  A10-0895
All vehicles (continued):
–  Install front noise insulation by locking quick release fasteners -1- and -2-.
  A10-1132
–  Connect coolant hose going to oil cooler at the location marked with an -arrow-.
  A10-10280
–  Fill at least 10 litres of pre-mixed coolant in the correct mixing ratio in the coolant tank by using the coolant filling device -VAS 6096-:
l  »G12+« (40 %) and water (60 %) for frost protection to -25 ℃
l  »G12+« (50 %) and water (50 %) for frost protection to -35 ℃
l  »G12+« (60 %) and water (40 %) for frost protection to -40 ℃
–  Screw on the Adapter -VAG 1274/8- on the coolant compensation container.
–  Fit the coolant charger -VAS 6096- onto the adaptor -VAG 1274/8-.
–  Run vent hose -1- into a small container -2-. As well as air, a small quantity of coolant will be expelled and must be collected.
–  Close both valves -A- and -B-. To do this turn the lever at right angles to direction of flow.
–  Connect hose -3- to compressed air.
l  Pressure: 6 to 10 bar.
  A19-0351
–  Open valve -B-. To do this turn lever to direction of flow.
The ejector generates a vacuum in the cooling system.
l  The display instrument needle must move to the green area.
–  Also briefly open valve -A- (turn lever in direction of flow) so that hose on charge unit can fill with coolant.
–  Close valve -A- again.
–  Leave valve -B- open for another 2 minutes.
l  The nozzle creates more pressure in the cooling system.
l  The pointer of the indicator must remain in the green zone.
–  Close valve -B-.
l  The needle on the gauge should stop in the green zone. The vacuum level in the cooling system is then sufficient for subsequent filling.
If the needle does not reach the green zone, repeat the process.
If the vacuum drops the cooling system is leaking.
–  Disconnect the compressed air hose.
–  Open valve -A-.
The vacuum in the cooling system acts by sucking the coolant in the filling device for cooling systems -VAS 6096-, which fills the cooling circuit.
–  Remove the coolant charger -VAS 6096- from the coolant expansion tank.
  A19-0353
–  Fit the adaptor -VAG 1274/10- onto the adaptor -VAG 1274/8-.
  A19-0065
–  Open bleeder screw -arrow- at coolant pipe.
–  Pour in coolant until it emerges at bleeding points.
–  Close bleed screw.
  A19-0255
–  Loosen coolant hose going to heat exchanger and pull back hose until bleeder hole in hose -arrow- is no longer blocked by the connection.
–  Fill up with coolant until it flows out at bleeder hole in coolant hose.
–  Push coolant hose onto connection and secure with hose clip.
–  Screw on cap on coolant expansion tank.
–  Start engine.
–  Set the heating / air conditioning to „HI“.
–  Run the engine for 3 minutes at 2000 rpm.
–  Allow engine to run at idling speed until two large coolant hoses at main radiator become warm.
–  Run the engine for 1 minute at 2000 rpm.
–  Switch off ignition and allow engine to cool down.
  WARNING
Hot vapour/hot coolant may escape when opening expansion tank. Cover cap with cloth and open carefully.
  A19-0270
–  Check the coolant level.
l  The coolant level must be at the MAX marking when the engine is cold.
l  The coolant level can be above the MAX marking when the engine is hot from operation.
