  WARNING
The fuel system is pressurised. The pressure in the high-pressure part of the injection system must be reduced to a residual pressure prior to opening, see page . A rag must then be wrapped around the joint and the residual pressure dissipated by carefully slackening the joint.
To prevent injuries to persons and/or damage to the fuel injection and ignition system, the following must be noted:
t  For safety reasons, fuse No. 41 must be removed from fuse holder before fuel system is opened because fuel pump can be activated by the door contact switch in driver door.
t  Certain tests may lead to a fault being detected by the control unit and stored. For this reason, the fault memory must be interrogated and deleted when all tests and repairs have been completed. After the fault memory is erased, it will be necessary to generate the readiness code: → Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051
t  Do not touch or remove the ignition cables with the engine running or idling.
t  Always switch off the ignition before disconnecting or reconnecting injection or ignition system wiring or tester cables.
t  Always switch off the ignition before cleaning the engine.
t  Only disconnect and connect the battery with the ignition switched off, otherwise the engine control unit may be damaged.
If in the test drives it is necessary to use the tester units, take note of the following:
t  Test and measuring instruments must always be secured to rear seat and operated by a second person from this location.
–  If test equipment is operated from the front passenger's seat, the occupant could suffer injury in the event of an accident if the front passenger's airbag is triggered.
t  If the engine is to be turned at starter speed without starting:

If you want to crank the engine at starting speed without actually starting it (e.g. compression test), first unplug the connectors from the ignition coils and the injectors. In addition, remove the fuse No. 28 of the control unit for fuel pump -J538-.
  Note
Removing fuse 28 will interrupt the voltage supply for the fuel pump control unit -J538-.
