Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Extractor -VAG 1782-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Electric drill with plastic brush attachment
t  Protective glasses
t  Silicone sealant → Electronic parts catalogue

Removing
–  Loosen the fasteners -2-, -3- and -5- and remove the front noise insulation.
–  Remove anti-roll bar -1- → Rep. gr.40.
  Caution
Danger of damage to oil pipes and hoses.
Do NOT stretch, kink or bend oil pipes or hoses.
  Caution
Risk of damage to parts of the running gear.
Never lower the vehicle onto its wheels if the assembly mountings, steering box or subframe cross brace are not properly installed.
The vehicle must NOT be supported by applying a trolley jack or similar to the subframe or subframe cross brace.
–  Remove the securing bolts of the steering box.

–  Remove bolt -arrow-.
–  Detach steering column -1- from steering box -2-.
–  Tie the steering box with cables connected tight.
–  Place the oil extractor -VAG 1782- underneath the engine and drain the engine oil.

Please observe requirements for disposal.

–  Unplug connector from oil level and oil temperature sender -G266--arrow-.
–  Remove oil level and oil temperature sender -G266-.

–  Unscrew the bracket of the refrigerant line -Arrow- from the oil sump.

–  Extract bolts -1... 19-.
–  Take off sump: if necessary loosen it by striking lightly with a rubber hammer.
Installing
l  Tightening torques → Chapter
t  Silicone sealant → Electronic parts catalogue
  Note
t  Observe use-by date of the silicone sealant.
t  The sump must be installed within 5 minutes after applying the silicone sealant.
t  Replace the bolts tightened using goniometrics.
t  Always replace seals, gaskets and self-locking nuts
–  Spray sealing surface with sealant remover and wait for it to take effect.
–  Remove sealant remaining on sump (top section) with flat scraper.
  WARNING
Protect eyes against injuries.
Wear safety goggles.

–  Remove sealant residue on sump (bottom section) using rotating plastic brush or similar.
–  Clean sealing surfaces; they must be free of oil and grease.

–  Cut off the tube nozzle on the front marking (diameter of the nozzle approximately. 3 mm).

–  Apply the bead of silicone sealant onto the clean sealing surface of the sump (bottom section), as illustrated.
t  Thickness of the sealant grub: 2 to 3 mm
  Note
t  The sump must be installed within 5 minutes after applying the silicone sealant.
t  The bead of sealant must not be thicker than specified, otherwise excess sealant can enter the sump and obstruct the strainer in the oil intake pipe.
–  Immediately fit sump (bottom section) and tighten bolts; tightening sequence → Fig..
  Note
Let sealing compound dry for approx. 30 minutes after installing oil sump. Oil must only be filled after this.
–  Fill up with engine oil and check the oil level → Booklet301.
–  Install steering box → Rep. gr.48.
–  Install the stabiliser bar → Rep. gr.40.
–  Fit noise insulation → Rep. gr.66.
Further assembly is basically the reverse of the dismantling sequence.
